Adopting a cat is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and your household – and, of course, the cat! There's plenty to decide when rehoming a cat, such as whether your pet will be an outdoor or indoor cat and the best cat food to feed them. While you're making these decisions, here are 7 reasons why cat adoption is such a great idea.

1. Cats Are Good for You

Becoming a cat owner could be good for your mental health. Psychological reports suggest that cats can reduce loneliness in those who live on their own, plus having to feed and groom a cat can lend routine to your day and help you restructure your life.1

2. Cats Are Low Maintenance

Cats enjoy your company, but they also love a little "me time" and like their own space. That makes them a low-maintenance pet that's ideal for busy animal lovers. Just feed them the best cat food and fresh water, keep a clean litter tray, get them some stimulating toys, and show them plenty of love and affection.

3. Cats and Kids Go Together

Cats can help children learn about caring for animals, social skills, and routines – especially if they help out at kitty's feeding time. Studies show that younger cats, in particular, become affectionate with the children in the family.2

4. Cats Can Keep You Active

Many cats enjoy charging around the home and climbing up their scratching posts or trees and fences if you have the outdoor space for them. They encourage you to get up and about yourself, which has a range of health benefits, both physical and mental.

5. Cats Keep You Young

According to Harvard, mental stimulation keeps your mind fit and helps stave off cognitive decline – keeping you young for longer.3 Cats love to play and will enjoy chasing a toy, looking for something you hide, and gently "wrestling" with your hand- all great mentally stimulating acts for pet and owner.

6. Cat Adoption Saves Money

Buying a cat from a breeder or a pet store can be costly, and you still often have to pay for neutering/spaying and vaccinations. Many shelters provide all this at a single cost, as their priority is safely re-homing their guests.

7. Cat Adoption Saves Lives

Every cat that gets adopted from a cat shelter or rescue charity is a cat's life that you've saved. Plus, taking your new cat home frees up more space for other cats in need.

What could be more worthwhile than that?
