When Is National Dog Day? Plus 10 Fun Ways to Celebrate

  • Lifestyle + Exercise
  • Holidays
  • Enrichment

If you’re anything like most pet parents, you don’t really need a special reason to celebrate your dog — but National Dog Day gives us the perfect excuse anyway!

So, When Is National Dog Day?

National Dog Day is celebrated every year on August 26. Founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, this day recognizes dogs of all breeds—pure and mixed—and aims to raise awareness about rescue and adoption efforts1.

It’s a time to celebrate everything dogs bring to our lives: love, laughter, muddy paw prints, and the kind of loyalty you just can’t find anywhere else.

Why We Celebrate

Beyond the cute social posts and dog-friendly cupcakes, National Dog Day serves a bigger purpose—to remind us of the incredible bond we share with dogs, and to spotlight the importance of responsible pet ownership, and the roles that various organizations and rescues play.

According to Shelter Animal Count’s 2024 report, approximately 2.8 million dogs entered shelters in the U.S., and around half (57%) are adopted. That means every adoption makes a huge difference.

What Are Fun Things to Do with Your Dog on National Dog Day?

Not sure how to celebrate? Here are ten ideas, whether your dog’s idea of fun involves fetch, food, or just a good nap beside you.

1. Plan a Doggy Day Trip

Plan a fun trip with your dog and maybe visit a local trail or dog-friendly beach. Outdoor activity can be great for your dog’s physical (and mental) health.

2. Host a “Barkday” Party

Invite fellow dog parents and their pups for a backyard bash. Just make sure the treats are dog-safe—no chocolate or xylitol, please! Check out our guide for fun dog party ideas.

3. Book a Pup Photoshoot

Capture your dog’s best angles (and their worst — let’s be honest, they’re all adorable).

4. Make Homemade Dog Treats

Try a simple homemade peanut butter and banana biscuit recipe. Or, if you’re feeling lazy, treat your dog to some healthy store-bought treats. Small dietary rewards can do wonders when strengthening pet–owner bonds.

Making Every Day a Dog Day

Whether it’s August 26 or an ordinary Tuesday, celebrating your dog is really about connection. It’s about acknowledging how much joy they bring to your life, and returning that love in ways that matter.

Because when you look into those big, trusting eyes, you realize every day spent with your dog is already worth celebrating.
